Todo el mundo By Harriet Hodgson How did a thin person like me become overweight? My mother had probable Alzheimer's disease and I was her caregiver for nine years. During this time she lost the ability to read, understand television, converse with others, and the ability to speak. Eating was the only thing that gave her pleasure. To give her some quality of life I took her out to lunch every Wednesday and cooked a gourmet meal for her every Sunday. Slowly but surely, I put on extra pounds. Though I had to buy larger clothes, I wasn't aware of my weight gain, and continued to think of myself as thin. Looking back, I realize I was so busy caring for my mother that I forgot to take care of myself. After she died I still didn't take care of myself because I was grieving. But the day came when I stepped out of the shower, looked in the mirror, and gasped. Who was this person? When I went for my annual physical exam my doctor told me that tests showed a slight increase in my blood sugar level. She cautioned me about becoming a late onset diabetic and said I could avoid this by shedding a few pounds. "The next time you see me I'll be thinner," I declared. I bought some walking shoes, a pedometer, and jined a health club. In the evenings I walked in my neighborhood. A year and a half later I was back to my college weight and clothing size. My blood sugar was normal, I had renewed energy, and could out-walk people half my age. Now my goal is to maintain a healthy weight. I walk 10,000 steps a day, which is about fve miles. On snowy or rainy days I walk around the center island in my kitchen, inside at a local mall, or every grocery store aisle. Instead of piling thngs on the bottom step to take upstairs, I look for excuses to climb stairs. Sometimes I don't get in 10,000 steps a day and when this happens I don't punish myself. I just walk more the next day. In addition to my daily walking. I cut my protein intake, ate more fruit, vegetables, and fiber, and cut portion sizes. I'm 5' 5 1/2" inches tall, flucuate between 115-117 pounds, and have a Body Mass Index (weight adjusted for sex, height, and age) of 19 - an excellent number. Daily walks help me to prevent diabetes, maintain a normal blood pressure, reduce the risks of heart attack and colon cancer, and slow bone loss. Walking can do the same for you. If you haven't been physically active lately, get a medical checkup before you start walking. No matter how old you are, it's never too late to lose the weight! Copyright 2005 by Harriet Hodgson. Todo el mundo By Jordi Shoman A healthy diet should include foods from the four main food groups. One of the best ways to lose weight is to follow the food pyramid and eat the suggested servings of each food group for your age. This method of healthy eating does require planning and you need to have a copy of the food pyramid in front of you as you plan your menu for the week. Planning a weekly menu is a good way to get started and once you do this for several weeks, the kinds and amounts of foods that you should be eating will soon become clear to you. Although junk food is a no-no when you are on a diet, many people who do eat healthy foods still indulge in their favorite snacks from time to time. There is nothing wrong with treating yourself from time to time as long as you don't make it a practice or overindulge. There are also differences in what vegetarians term "healthy foods", so if you don't eat meat, it does mean that you exclude all animal proteins from your diet. Proteins are essential nutrients that vegetarians might be at risk of not getting unless they pay particular attention to their foods. Soy is comparable to animal protein and should be included in a daily diet if you are a vegetarian. Other sources of protein include * Dry beans
* Peas
* Lentils Some grains and vegetables are also good sources of protein. Soy milk and tofu are good sources of calcium and green leafy plants are a good source of iron. Even if you are not a vegetarian, these foods will help to complement your diet and help you to feel full. All dieters should include a multi-vitamin and mineral supplement just to make sure. Drinking at least 8 glasses of water a day helps to flush out the burned calories and keep your body functioning the way it should. Interested in Healthy Eating? Todo el mundo By Todd Wessel As a professional, when I get hired for an installation of a new landscape, I want the environment the plants are being installed into to be in the best possible condition. A good soil mix of compost, topsoil and a little sand would be perfect. This will aid in the water and nutrient holding capacity of the soil, faster and easier root development into the surrounding soils and drainage, by allowing water to move away from the plants. Oh yea, and one more important thing. The prep makes for very, very easy digging. When you can install a new landscape into these conditions, you're beginning the process for a long and successful landscape. Our reputations are built from the ground up Our reputations as professionals are built on our past performances. When you take time to prep your planting beds, you guarantee success to your clients and to your professional career. Happy clients and healthy gardens speak volumes to everyone. I recommend these processes to all of our clients, trying to drive home the point that doing things right in the beginning, will result in a healthier and brighter future. Nine times out of ten though, it comes down to the almighty dollar and the soil prep is the one thing that usually gets discarded as not necessary. Clients would rather have the bigger plants, heck; we can worry about the soil later. Big mistake. Amending the Soil If you can afford to amend the soil in your garden, do so. This is the most important thing you can do to guarantee the future health of your garden. When you amend your soil before planting your landscape, you will be rewarded with; Read this and then read again. I know I already said it once, but this is so important; Better water and nutrient holding capacity in your soil(more efficient fertilizer usage and watering time for you), faster root development into surrounding soils ( plants will establish themselves faster, grow healthier with less effort from you) and help with better drainage by allowing water to drain away from the plants. When soils stay wet, plants struggle and die. Most soils in our area have a descent amount of clay in them. Clay soils will hold onto water, draining very slowly. Soil that drains slow stays wet longer. When soils stay wet, plants die. AMEND YOUR SOIL! Amend your soil like this If you have a heavy clay soil, spread 3" of compost on top of your beds and till to a depth of 12". This should help tremendously. The compost will help loosen the soil, creating more space for oxygen and helping with drainage. A heavy duty rear tine tiller from a rental shop will do a great job. Let the machine do the work for you. This size tiller should have very little problem getting thru any soil. If you have a sandy soil, water runs right thru. Use a 50/50 mix of topsoil and compost and cover beds to a 3" depth then till. Follow the same steps as above. The topsoil and compost mixture will help with the water and fertilizer holding capacity of your soil, allowing more to stay around the root zone longer. Figuring out material To figure out how many yards of compost you need(measure the length x width of your garden) to get square feet-->example 20 feet long x 10 feet wide= 200 square feet---- now you want to figure out how deep you want to put the compost. We said 3" of compost on top of the soil before we till--- take 3" divide by 12" to get the factor to multiply with the square footage of bed space. 3/12=.25--- 200x.25=50.00--- now divide 50/27 which is the cube factor----50/27=1.85 cubic yards of compost. Order 2 yards. Practice with different depths of compost till you get good at the calculations. When the prep is complete, make sure to grade the soil away form any buildings to allow for proper drainage. I dont think I need to amend my soil If you can't afford to amend your soil, dont worry, most plants will survive (survive not flourish) in the poorest of soils, as long as the soil doesnt stay wet all the time. Wet soils limit oxygen to the roots and most plants end up suffocating and dying. When you dig in wet soil, it has a fool odor and makes a sucking sound when you pull out the shovel. Amend this with compost or change the plans Plants installed into soil that is not amended, will survive and grow, but nowhere near as fast or healthy as in soils that were amended. Root systems will struggle to expand into hard clay soil and dry out faster from lack of water in sandy soil. Fertilizer will get held up in wet clay soil, never getting to the roots, or flow right by in the sandy soil because there is no holding capacity. You have two choices. Amend the soil before you plant and reap the rewards of doing things right or plant into the existing soil and baby-sit your landscape as it struggles to mature. Todo el mundo By Jason Gluckman In Chicago, personal injury is often caused by various accidents such as workplace accidents, slip and falls, medical malpractice, and car accidents. Because of these, victims need to hire the services of a Chicago personal injury lawyer in order to recover for damages. But since there are lots of personal injury lawyers these days, it is rather hard to choose one who is really competent and highly reliable. So, to better arrive at the best decision, people should be aware of some Chicago personal injury FAQS in order to have an insight about them. What personal injury lawyers do? Personal injury lawyers assist victims who suffered from physical injuries due to the negligence of another person. They help them in evaluating their cases in order to fully determine who is at fault. And once this is determined, they will assist the victim in filing a personal injury lawsuit in order to receive a personal injury claim. But before a victim can collect this, they should be able to prove that the defendant is liable and that there is indeed negligence on their part. What is a personal injury claim? A personal injury claim is an amount that a victim of personal injury can demand to compensate for the damages he suffered due to the defendant's negligence. This claim can include payment for medical bills, lost wages, and mental agony and emotional stress. The first two can be easily quantified but the last one requires the expertise of a personal injury lawyer in order to tabulate this. However, when the negligence is not fully established, this claim may be denied that is why it is advisable that the victim should note down every important detail that is related to the event. What is contingency fee? A contingency fee is considered the most common payment arrangement for victims who are seeking legal representation in personal injury lawsuits. This means that when the lawyer proves the negligence on the part of the defendant and the victim receives compensatory damages, he will be entitled to a percentage of this amount as payment for his services. But, if the case is denied, the victim will not have to pay any amount. These are just some of the Chicago personal injury lawyer FAQs that people should know. This information may not be significant to some people, but this can be of great help to those who are victims of personal injury. Chicago Personal Injury Lawyers provides detailed information on Chicago Personal Injury Claims, Chicago Personal Injury Funding, Chicago Personal Injury Law Firms, Chicago Personal Injury Laws and more. Todo el mundo By Vivian Gilbert Zabel A couple on the Dr. Phil show argued over the amount that would be spent on their wedding. The husband-to-be wanted an elaborate wedding which would cost well over $10,000. The bride refused, wanting a much more modest celebration. I dont remember anything being said about the income the couple had or what financial help, if any, would come from parents. However, the final analysis by Dr. Phil was the couple should plan on spending at least $3,000. I sat in shock as I agreed with the woman: The money could be used toward a down payment on a house, a saving account for emergencies, or other needs for setting up house. Many couples now-a-days are going into debt to have expensive weddings, starting out on the negative side of a balance sheet. A wedding should provide memories of a loving couple becoming one, not the first step toward bankruptcy. The first step toward deciding what to spend on a wedding should be how much money the couple has, including any amount provided by family. The funds should be those not required for other necessities or expenses for living. Going into debt should not be an option. Once the amount is known, then a list of what each person wants without change. For example, one bride I knew wanted her own wedding dress. Everything else was negotiable. The couple borrowed the arches and candle holders from a friends friend. They used silk flowers, and with the help of family members, made all flower arrangements. Another friend created the veil. Family and friends made items for the reception and served food they provided. The final cost of the wedding was less than $500, yet it was beautiful. The guests never knew what was created or donated. Memories of the wedding included some rather ridiculous ones, such as the member of the wedding party that exposed everyone to a very violent stomach upset, but the wedding and reception were lovely and memorable for the right reasons. A granddaughters wedding cost about $600, but family members all chipped in and covered the expenses so that the young couple wouldnt have to start their life together in a financial hole. A mother covered the cost of a limited number of flowers. A grandmother provided the cake, punch, and other eats for the reception. Everyone provided copies of pictures taken during the ceremony and reception, many of professional quality. Perhaps if the couple has money to spare, or a parent does, spending thousands of dollars on a wedding may be understandable. But people of limited means can still have a wedding to remember for considerably less than $10,000, or even $3,000, without bankruptcy looming on the horizon. Todo el mundo By Allison Bliss Absolutely, Positively, Overnight, Guaranteed Reach out and touch someone VISA: It's everywhere you want to be All memorable promotional slogans, right? But how did these tiny phrases work for these BIG companies, to help position and promote their service? Thats the real question. Federal Express was perceived as just another shipping company. But they were very smart: they did market research. And what they found was that most shippers were not on time, and did not have viable tracking systems. Customers of those lesser shippers, therefore, were often angry, since their packages were lost or delayed. With that in mind, FedEx created a system that was extremely revolutionary for its time: hub shipping, which required that all orders be processed in one, centralized location. By activating a large fleet of planes and trucks (and people!), FedEx was able to meet the demand for guaranteed overnight serviceat a time when our culture as a whole was infusing speed to provide an edge in business. Now, of course, we can surf the Internet faster than we can talk. But back then, such a significant move to highlight FedExs differences from other shippers, and promote that difference absolutely, positively, convinced even us tough skeptics. Working in the film business at the time, we typically spent over a half-million dollars just to shoot one commercial or television episode. Naturally, we were reluctant to trust our original celluloid film to some shipper who might not temperature-protect it, thus ruining the image quality. Worse, we certainly couldnt contract with a shipper who might lose the film entirely, and wasnt insured to reimburse us the half-mil needed to re-shoot our film. Sure, now we can digitize a copy, or use a dozen other protective measures, but back then it was a very different techno-time. In our industry, the production cost was so incredibly prohibitive that we only hired people or equipment that absolutely, positively could get the job done, like FedEx. Looking back on those times, the ad slogans reveal lessons not in clever wording (as most companies mistakenly believe is the key), but rather in great thinking. After all, as were fond of saying, Knowledge is Bliss! Understanding what clients really need, and how your company can fill that niche, is the key to capturing ongoing business from satisfied clients. And its not just applicable to giant corporations, whose slogans we know so well. Small companies need intelligence to find out how theyre different, so they can really embrace and promote those differences. EXAMPLE OF HOW IT WORKS
One of my clients, Kathleen Kline & Associates, has a virtual office from which she provides transcription and editing services. She was selling against similar types of companies in her area. Once we surveyed her clients, we discovered that they valued the differences that set her apart from the plethora of other, less intellectually sophisticated editors and transcribers. Therefore, we promoted her "Intelligent Virtual Office" services and raised her rates to be commensurate with the value she brought to her clients. Kathleen's elite education (Diplme Suprieur from the Sorbonne in Paris), as well as her ability to understand and accurately transcribe technically complex subject matter from audio-taped interviews into real text, using the clients' actual words (as opposed to transcribers who simply employ phonetics, which yield impossible-to-understand or completely useless transcripts) greatly distinguished her company's value from her competitors. If you need a great, cost-effective transcriber, editor, or proofreader, I'd be glad to put you in touch with Kathleen Kline & Associates. She can tell you firsthand how her revenues jumped from embracing her differences and promoting that. CLEVER IDEA FROM A SMALL COMPANY
Patricia Griecci, CEO (and Top Dog) of the Smiling Dog company, makes products for Kids with Tails. What are her products? Dog cookies. Is there a market? Yes! As a matter of fact, ten million people regularly purchase such products. The idea for her business came to Patricia when she was trying to find a really nice dog bed for her own kid. She now thinks of herself as the Martha Stewart for dogs. At a professional conference a few years ago, Patricia described how she found and successfully filled this need, explaining, Go for the void. When you see a need, do your due diligence to make sure theres a market, and then create a niche product. Dont take no as never, but instead as a not now answer. WHAT TOP LEADERS TEACH US IN MARKETING
Because Ive been fortunate to work in television, taping thousands of business and community leaders, politicians, scientists, educators, entertainers, athletes, and a cross-section of humanity, Ive gathered some wisdom from them that directly applies to marketing. These noted professionals mostly concur that if one is to be recognized and remembered, and hopes to succeed, one is obligated to put forth the following principles. Stand up for your beliefs with integrity, passion and imagination. Dont be afraid to be differentthats what will be absolutely, positively remembered about your company! Be authentic in your messagessteer clear of hype, spam, and ho-hum marketing. Putting out that kind of drivel is insulting, and no one has time for it. Be clear, authentic, and consistent. Success is noisythe phone is ringing! So, be sure to listen to your intuition while its noisy and youre reaping profits, because thats what will guide you to keep your business thriving. Your brand is your promise. Stick to it, and consider its DNA as your own. None of us has all the answers. Find experts or those more knowledgeable than yourself to help youconsultants, mentors, coaches, lawyers, friends, kids, a board of directors, or whatever works. (This is also hugely stress reducing). How you think is more important than what you know. When you need someone knowledgeable and thoughtful to help you think things through, dont be afraid to ask for counsel (yep, thats what we do here). Its easy to make changes, because so few of us do. Todo el mundo By Craig Ballantyne Too many people train hard and eat right for only a couple of weeks and then worry that the scale hasn't budged. Then they lose motivation and drop out. But if you are one of those people that feel this way, then let me recommend three ways of monitoring your physical changes in order to assure you that you are losing fat and not losing strength or muscle. First, take tape measure circumference measures of your arms, chest, waist, hip, and thigh. The waist circumference should go down significantly, while your arm and thigh measurements should go down to a lesser extent. Your chest measurement may also go down if you have a lot of back fat to lose. If possible, have a reliable fitness professional take regular skinfold caliper measurements to help you estimate your body fat level. Do this every 4 weeks under similar conditions and you'll see that you are losing fat and gaining muscle. The third measurement to take is your strength levels. Your strength should not decrease during your workout program, unless you spent a lot of time prior to this with very heavy weights and less than 5 repetitions per set. Since the majority of people train with high reps and light weight, you can expect to gain strength when you start your workout. Take all of these measures now and then re-test in 4 weeks. Or even in 2 weeks. You'll find that your strength levels are the same (or better) and that you have lost inches and pounds of fat, but not muscle. However, I must mention the disclaimer that your results depend significantly on your nutrition. No matter how good the program, if you don't eat according to a good fat loss plan, you'll never reach your fat loss goals. Aim to make small, consistent improvements and you'll get the most out of your workouts. Craig Ballantyne is a Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist and writes for Men's Health, Men's Fitness, Maximum Fitness, Muscle and Fitness Hers, and Oxygen magazines. Todo el mundo By Merri Ellen Giesbrecht 1. When I suffered from postpartum depression, the best thing anyone did for me was look after my baby so I could either sleep, exercise or hit Starbucks for a decaf and read my favourite magazine. My first born was colicky and I needed a break every now and then. 2. I would suggest you ask your friend, "What do you need right now?", "What would you like more than anything right now?" If she answers, "my bathroom to be cleaned" - by all means do it! 3. Some other great things were little gifts like herbal teas and bath soaks to pamper myself. I absolutely loved this peppermint foot spray that Body Shop has. It soothed my aching feet. I also loved a pampering day at the Spa. 4. I had friends cook meals for me that were nutritious and hot. I craved a good hot meal. It took a lot to make a meal so this was SO FABULOUS! I had arranged for 5 friends to alternate meals each week for me. I knew from the first pregnancy that I had to be bold and ask for this kind of help. However, the first time, I was too shy and too afraid to ask. As a result, I was lonely, undernourished and depressed. Ask your friend what her favourite meal is and make it! Or if you aren't a good cook, order it! 5. If your friend is able, take her for a walk with her new baby. Getting outside was THE BEST thing for me! Find a great park or something with paths away from busy traffic. Walk past a playground so your friend can see happy moms and children playing. This was encouraging to me too. Warning!: Do talk to your doctor before engaging in any exercise routine. Merri Ellen is a former depression sufferer and mother of 2, wife of 1 hubby, owner of 1 cat. Todo el mundo By Mitchel Mason Garlic may be the oldest plant cultivated by humans. It belongs to the same family as onions and leeks and is used both as a culinary and a medicinal herb. Medicinally its useful for everything from colds and flu, to coughs and bronchitis, to high cholesterol and preventing heart disease. Its even proven useful in preventing cancer, and reducing the severity of established cancer. Growing Garlic Growing garlic can be tricky. It needs full sun, good drainage, and enough time to produce its bulbs. The secret to growing garlic is to plant it as close to the autumnal equinox as possible. Garlic likes to sprout roots and develop a bit before winter forces it to dormancy. This gives the side buds time to develop so they can burst into plump cloves in the spring. Garlic does well in container gardens and raised beds. It likes well-drained soil and will rot without proper drainage. It needs a good potting mix, and a well-finished compost or leaf mould mixed into the soil. Youll want to plant a variety thats appropriate to your climate. Planting in the Fall Remove the outer skin from the bulb and separate it into individual cloves. Plant the cloves in an upright position, root end down, standing erect, about 1 deep and 4 apart. Water well and place in a sunny spot where theyll be protected from cold winter winds and will get plenty of sun. Come Spring When your plants begin to grow in the spring, feed them with general-purpose plant food every 2 weeks and make sure theyre watered, but not over-watered, regularly. Garlic does not compete well with weeds. Keep your plants meticulously weeded. Garlic Grows Like a Nautilus Garlics growth pattern is a spiral, with new growth forming at the center. They will build a good stand of lush foliage before they begin to swell at their base and form bulbs. Once they do begin to swell, discontinue fertilization. The swelling is indication the garlic is bolting, which usually means going to seed, but in the case of garlic, instead of seed, they produce cloves, growing them as big as they can before the summer heat kills their leaves. The lowest and outermost leaves of the plant die first; the others die from the ground up. Harvesting is an Art If you wait too long, the garlic will splay open, the bulb wrapper will rot away, and it will be nearly impossible to get the bulb out of the ground. But the longer you leave garlic in the ground, the more potent it becomes. Generally, its time to harvest your garlic when the lower leaves have died, and the top leaves are still green. Once the plants start losing their leaves, stop watering, and let the soil begin to dry out. This will make harvesting easier. Youll want to remove each bulb without injuring it, so work your trowel blade underneath it, and pry it up from the bottom. Curing the Bulbs Handle the bulbs gently to avoid bruising them. Store them in a warm place where they can dry, but keep them out of the sun. Curing can take from 2 to 4 weeks. Once the bulbs are dry, trim off the roots, and scuff off the outer discolored parchment. If youve harvested your garlic at the right time, you should have several layers of bulb wrapper, and if youve got enough bulbs, you can turn them into an old-fashioned garlic braid. Store your cured garlic in a dry, well-ventilated place. To find more about herbs visit

Todo el mundo By Nan S. Russell Most people are looking for the secret to success; the secret to being a millionaire; the secret to winning at working. To help them find it, Amazon.com currently inventories 1,797 books promising success secrets, everything from "Mustang Sallies: Success Secrets of Women Who Refuse to Run With the Herd" to "The 21 Secrets of Self-Made Millionaires." So, if you're one of those looking, I'll save you some time. The bottom line is this - there is no secret. There's no magical formula to follow; no short-cuts to take or lottery tickets you can purchase. People who are winning at working know it takes persistence, determination, commitment, passion, practice, focus and hard work. There are no secrets to any of that. Just look around. Take Chester Carlson. Chester became a rich man as the successful inventor of an electrostatic paper-copying process that later became the Xerox Corporation, even though twenty corporations rejected his idea. It took Chester seven years of persistence and determination before he found one tiny company willing to purchase his invention. Or take Julia Child. After receiving a contract for a French cookbook, Julia worked five years, with two collaborators, only to produce a manuscript that was rejected by the publisher. A year of revisions produced another rejected manuscript. But Julia refused to give up. It took eight years and a second publisher for Julia's cookbook, which sold more than a million copies, to find a bookshelf. If you want to be winning at working, stop looking for some secret "out there" to bring you success. Instead, turn your sights inward and you'll find everything you need. You see, you're the secret to your success. But if you think you don't have what it takes, think again. Visit any craft fair, hobbyist, volunteer organization or internet blog. Note poets, musicians, artists, athletes, hackers, spammers and graffiti artists. Determination, persistence, initiative and hard work manifests itself in many ways and places, some positive endeavors and some not so positive. But it's the same ingredients. And they're inside you waiting to be tapped. People work on novels after a full day's work. They develop products in their garages, then figure out how to manufacture and market them. They volunteer to coach their daughter's soccer team or organize food drives for their community. They put energy into their interests and passions. They persist against hardships, set-backs and disappointments, demonstrating with their actions they have what it takes. Stop looking for success secrets and start realizing you're the best kept secret you have. Like Moliere puts it, "The heart can do anything." Find your heart in your work and you can do anything, too. (c) 2005 Nan S. Russell. All rights reserved.
